THANK YOU! Your response to Calls to Action over the last five years has mobilized the State of Michigan in dedicating resources to acquire and expand public lands at the northern end of Keweenaw County. But that and other crucial land is still at risk of fragmentation.
Along with over 25,000 acres in the Keweenaw Recreation area, the DNR has an opportunity to protect over 15 miles of a major outdoor recreation corridor in Keweenaw County. The main motorized trail corridor in Keweenaw County is the economic backbone of the outdoor recreation industry and tourism in Keweenaw and Houghton Counties. Verdant Timber (TRG) owns about 15 miles of the Main Motorized Trail from Mohawk to the Montreal Meadows. Verdant will not sell a trail easement but can sell the land at any time. State ownership would “lock in” public access, secure the at-risk trail, and provide opportunities for improvements that would benefit a variety of outdoor recreation enthusiasts.
KORC’s goal by 2029 is to have all of these crucial lands put into the public trust, forever. To accomplish this goal, we need your help.
