Dear Governor Whitmer:
Throughout your term you have been working to “fix the damn roads” and before your term ends, Keweenaw County need your help to fix one more “damn road” - Brockway Mountain Drive.
Brockway Mountain Drive is a 9.3 mile historic and scenic road built by manual labor during the Great Depression. Initially the brainstorm of the Keweenaw County Road Commission (and later the CCC), Brockway Mountain Drive was initiated as a way to employ out-of-work copper miners and benefit Keweenaw County. The concept was to create a paved scenic drive for automobile tourism and connect the Keweenaw, who’s iconic copper mining industry was already in decline, with the emerging downstate Michigan auto industry. This plan was a success and for decades the Brockway Mountain Drive has been enjoyed by generations of Michiganders and visitors from across the county and around the world. Brockway Mountain Drive is also on the National Register of Historic Places and will require a unique design effort to bring the roadway up to current standards while maintaining its historic character.
Brockway Mountain Drive is unusual as a paved seasonal county road. It experiences tens of thousands of motorized visitors every year from May to October. Please say something personal about your experience with the Brockway Mountain Drive: “When guests come to Keweenaw, Brockway Mountain Drive is at the top of places to visit.” Or “My family visits Brockway Mountain Drive every summer.” Or, “My family has been enjoying BMD for 4 generations but the conditions of the road have become almost unbearable if it wasn’t for the outstanding scenic views.”
Unfortunately, since the 1960’s, funding to pave Brockway Mountain Drive has not been available. It is being advertised as a key spur of the Scenic Byway System and yet there is no funding to pave and maintain it. We need your help to direct $10 million dollars to the Keweenaw County Road Commission to pave Brockway Mountain. The Keweenaw County Road Commission has developed a conceptual two-phase project plan for road construction while maintaining access to the popular east and west lookouts.
